Chit Chat

(cross-posted at Kindleboards)

This has been a fun, fun week for Space Junque.

The big news: Kindleboards’ own BTackitt won the Oberon gift certificate. This contest was fun, and I like having a special good prize for a giveaway to launch a book.

I had a let-down feeling though when it was over. I was sad for everyone who didn’t win. I’m thinking about the next book, and what to do for it. I wonder if it would be fun to have three prizes, something like Amazon gift certificates, one $50, one $30, and one $20.

I was involved in some awesome interviews this week —

David Wisehart at Kindle Author asks wonderful questions. And I interviewed my editor, Anne Frasier (Theresa Weir), on Kindle Nation Daily.
Last week Anne interviewed me at her blog, Monkey With A Pen.

Blue Amber Alert

Blue Amber used to be the opening chapters of Bleeder. It shows the settlement where the heroine Mallory grew up and introduces quite a few of Bleeder’s story elements.

If Bleeder were an epic fantasy, I never would have separated the Blue Amber chapters. But because they happen when the heroine is so much younger than in the main story, they don’t really fit in the romance form.

So my bright idea was I would make Blue Amber available as an extended prologue. It’s longer than a short story, but shorter than a novella. Blah, blah, blah, long story short: Somebody bought Blue Amber when I very momentarily put the price up at Smashwords from free to 99 cents.

Argh! It was only one person, but I didn’t really want anybody to pay for it.

At the moment, it’s pulled from being able to download. I’ve decided to add more to it and give it a better cover. To the person who did buy Blue Amber at Smashwords: you will be able to download the new and improved version for free. That’s the great thing about Smashwords: Once you buy a book, you can always download it again in any format you want, and if the author has uploaded a new version you get to choose the version you want.

BUT I’ve decided that no matter how long Blue Amber turns out, I’m going to make it free. Now I wish nobody had bought it at all.

Last Day To Enter — and a Sneak Peek at Space Junque’s Sequel

Hi all, it’s the last day to enter the contest, and tomorrow +/- 10 a.m. Pacific time I’ll click the Random Sequence Generator to find the winner. I’ve been doing test runs. It’s fast and simple — in fact, it seems too fast and too simple after this waiting.

As of now, we have 16 entrants and 58 entries. I’ve entered you in the order I received the questionnaires, so LM has slots 1, 2, 3, and 4; BT has 5, 6, 7, and 8 and so on. You’re entered in an Open Office spreedsheet in a vertical column. I’ll run the RSG, and put the resultant sequence in the column next to your names. Whichever name ends up with “1” next to it will be the winner, who will receive their Oberon gift certificate via email right after that.

EDIT and NOTE: I’m going over to a friend’s for hot tub and wine tonight, so if any last-minute entries come in DO NOT FREAK if you don’t get a confirmation of your entry until tomorrow morning, Pacific time!

Just think, this time tomorrow, the winner might have already picked out her/his Oberon treats!

On another note, several people have asked when Bleeder is coming out. I gave a short answer on Space Junque’s thread at Kindleboards, but I’ll tell a little more here.

Bleeder takes place over 100 years after Space Junque when the new world’s geopolitical forms are well-established. I wrote Space Junque as a prequel to show how the world of Bleeder came about.

I always meant Space Junque to be a novella, a quick fun read that established the world of the Afterworld series. Little did I know that Char and Jake — and Durga! — would take on lives of their own. There is more to tell before getting to Bleeder.

So now, I’m writing Spiderwork, the sequel to Space Junque. I’m pretty excited about it — poor Char and Jake! They’ve fallen so deeply in love it hurts, but the political reality of the new world conspires to keep them apart. Meanwhile, Durga has her own troubles.

Durga is the goddess Asherah’s “chosen one” — which means more work and responsibility than anything else. Durga has spent so much time carrying out the will of the goddess and keeping Geraldo away from the other girls that she’s completely oblivious to her own personal needs and desires.

When Khai, the prince of Luxor, arrives in Corcovado for a meeting of the new world’s power brokers, he falls hard for Durga. He can love no other woman — but the very laws he intends to impose will make it impossible for them to be together.

Isn’t this gorgeous?  This painting is called City of Angels by Nathalie Suellen, an artist who also goes by the name of Lady Symphonia. She’s agreed to adapt this picture for Spiderwork’s cover! This is Durga — she’ll have her red hair and spider tattoo on the official cover.

Update: This is the adapted picture. Gorgeous!

(The dystopic city in the background is Garrick, boo!)

Contest Quickie

For those checking in on the contest, there are currently 15 contestants and 54 entries. Not everyone got all four right. I plan on running the random generator at 10 a.m. Pacific time on Sunday.

In honor of contestants everywhere, and in fond memory of Tony Curtis, let’s watch a pie fight!

RIP, Tony Curtis

Alice Ghosting — For Amanda Hocking’s Zombiepalooza

Amanda Hocking is putting on a Zombiepalooza at her bog, My Blood Approves, for the month of October. Every day will be packed with guest bloggers, scary stories, and giveaways from Amanda and tons of other indie authors, all to celebrate the “societal contributions of zombies.”

I’ve written a flash/short story for the ‘palooza based on the world of Space Junque called Alice Ghosting. It will appear October 16th.

As someone at the Kindleboards said, is it October yet?

Contest Update

I’m home from my day job, and I’ve updated the list.  There are 7 10 entrants so far, as you can see by the list in the “contest virgin” comments.

I do like the plug-in form I’m using for the questions, but it would be so much better if it worked in ALL browsers! So far, people with Safari and Firefox have problems. (hello, plug-in developer!) That’s why I’m sending confirming emails to the entrants, to make sure everyone’s entry is counted.

This is fun!

I want to thank Red Adept Reviews for putting a notice about the contest on her website.

Contest Virgin (me) — & Entry Initials

(I love my cover!)

So we’re into the contest now, and there are entries! Woohoo!

I’m obviously NOT an expert at doing contests. The WordPress form for the questionnaire seems to be working just great.

edit: when you get to the end of the questions, BEFORE you click “calculate results,” make sure you enter your name and email address. That’s how your entry is saved in WordPress.

I’m sending confirming emails out to everyone who enters. It’s a manual process, so there may be a delay between when you enter and when you get the email, especially if you enter when I’m at my day job.

Look for your initials in the comments of this post. If you don’t see your initials (of the name you enter the contest with) something is amiss.

Contest For Oberon Gift Certificate – Enter Here!

To Win A $100 Oberon Gift Certificate:

1. Answer the following four questions about Space Junque, available for Kindle or at Smashwords. The answer to the first question can be found in the sample available free at Smashwords. The other three answers come later in the book. Each correct answer is worth one entry.

2. The form will ask for your name and email. If you win, I’ll need your email address to send you the gift certificate. When the contest is over, all email addresses will be deleted. They will NOT be used for any other purpose than this contest. You’ll receive confirmation of your total correct answers at the end of the questionnaire.

3. Contestants may enter one time. In the event of multiple entries, the first entry will count and subsequent entries will be disqualified.

4. Contest ends at 11:59 p.m. October 2, 2010, Pacific Standard Time. Any entries received after that will be disqualified.

5. The winning entry will be selected using a random sequence generator on Sunday, October 3, 2010 and the winner announced here at the blog.

I wish everyone could win.

edit: be sure to put in your name and email before you click CALCULATE RESULTS or your entry won’t go through!

edit #2: (we learn as we go) Apparently some people are having trouble with Firefox. An alternate entry method — though not as slick — is to email your answers to lkr [at] lkrigel dot com. You’ll still receive a confirming email.

Let The Games Begin!
